The country faced more ethnic clashes with the influx of immigrants as nativists movements appeared. There was a huge disparity with slaves, Native Americans, and lower-class whites. The country's growth, at times, strained under certain pressures. The birth rates were up, the mortality rates went down, and immigration, mainly from German and Irish settlers, grew.
